VHS stands for Video Home System (often called, incorrectly, Vertical Helical Scan) is a system for recording and reproducing analog audio and video.
The VHS is physically similar to the audio system (cassette) only, but with differences that the tape is much wider (½ inch) and the box or plastic tape that contains it is larger. The anatomy of a VHS video-cassette comprises two internal reels and tape path (this basic design is used for all audio cassettes, video or data). The opening through which you access the tape is protected by a lid that opens automatically by a simple mechanism which when taken into a VHS player.
Until the advent of DVD, and DVD players that connect to TV or the readers / DVD burners on computers, HSV was the most used and popular from the beginning to the 90s to the late twentieth century .
Content
It was developed in the 1970s by JVC and launched in 1973 by JVC itself and its parent company, Matsushita (Panasonic), together with a large group of licensees. He came to compete with the domestic system then only the market, the Sony Betamax, also manufactured under license by Sanyo.
Gotta catch on and become standard for more than fifteen years due to better marketing strategy. It had a manufacturing licensing system more flexible than the Sony and knew better understand the needs of users, providing the beginnings of a longer recording time of two hours, compared to only one hour of the first devices to Beta. Also made alliances with film distributors (especially the exclusivity on pornographic movies.)
In 1988 Sony conceded defeat and announced the production of a line of VHS recorders. VHS had 95% market share. The result, VHS became the standard for the next 10 years.
Super VHS
Although the technical quality of VHS was significantly improved since its introduction, the quality did not meet professional standards, especially when you need editing and visual effects. The technical quality was improved significantly with S-VHS (Super VHS). Some new operations started using it as a capture format that could be returned to the production office and copied immediately to a higher quality format for editing. This minimized the loss of quality involves editing. The S-VHS had become undoubtedly the most popular format in news work if they had not released the new digital formats. Since these are similarly priced and offer better technical quality.
In the late 80s and early 90s began to become popular on Laserdisc, which appeared later as a better quality video and audio but the high cost of the disc and your player, re-recording is impossible, limit titles available for film and entertainment companies did not superimposed as home on the VHS format that could be copied and re-record.
